1936 Collection

Fred Samuel was first introduced to the world of jewelry through his family, who famously dealt in gemstones.

As a child, he was mesmerized by the sparkle of gems beneath the Argentine sun.

He continued to cultivate this fascination in Paris, where he undertook training with the Worms brothers, pearl and gemstone dealers.

Spurred on by his mentors, Fred Samuel chose Rue Royale for the location of his first boutique thanks to its elegant arcades. He opened his office beneath one of these in a discreet space between shadow and light above the boutique.

More than a simple decorative detail, this Art Deco arch holds particular significance for FRED, as it also reflects architecture typical of the Mediterranean and French Riviera, places Fred Samuel so cherished.

Now one of the Maison’s hallmark patterns, it has inspired all four 1936 sets.

Both the connecting theme of its creations and a unique design element, the arch reveals multiple faces on each of its ten 1936 pieces. In all the sets, the Art Deco line plays on variable geometries, transforms from a perfect symmetry to a fluid asymmetry, or multiplies in a graphic cascade.

In homage to gems, an eternal source of amazement for Fred Samuel, these contemporary variations encounter, in turn, three colored stones and refined Akoya pearls.

The first set shines a light on the Colombian emerald, sourced from the famous Muzo mines.

On a necklace, it is set in the hollow of a majestic, upturned arch. This exceptional central stone of over 4 carats sparkles with a magnetic green, whose depth is enhanced by architectural lines set with both baguette- and brilliant-cut diamonds. Held by claws in the same way as a solitaire setting, an emerald of a similar weight and radiance is the highlight of a ring whose band features a series of arches. This graphic interplay is reproduced on a pair of earrings, embellished with two large stones.

For the second 1936 set, FRED has selected the cushion-cut Sri Lanka sapphire and reinterpreted its arch like an elegant vault, framing a waterfall of diamonds in an interplay of grain-set and claw-set stones.

This motif owes all its grace to its articulated, fluid structure. It adorns a supple, white-gold necklace elevated by a 7.13-carat Royal Blue sapphire and diamonds, as well as a pair of earrings adorned with two stones.

A deep-blue ring completes the set with a sapphire of over 6 carats.

The Mozambique ruby blazes on the third set. Its powerful Pigeon Blood hue highlights the curve of the arch, cascaded and replicated on a supple choker necklace with a diamond pavé.

This set is completed by a ring and pair of earrings, cloaked in an oval-cut ruby of up to 3 carats.
