Soleil d'or and 1936 collection

In 1936, with the bold pioneering spirit of a 28-year-old, Fred Samuel founded a Maison like no other on Rue Royale in Paris. Pulsating with boundless creativity, he championed a contemporary, versatile, and joyful approach to jewelry. His avant-garde passion for cultured pearls and colored stones combined with a modern aesthetic that was shaped by the desire to create jewelry in motion, free and anchored in everyday life.

Boldness and freedom, colors and light, as well as flowing lines: these signature codes are illuminated in this new High Jewelry collection, with two chapters that echo with the depth of fundamental values. Named 1936 and Soleil d’Or Sunrise, these two creative stories of 19 pieces recount the birth of a Maison and its unparalleled signature, which has shone for almost 90 years—that of FRED, The Sunshine Jeweler.

Chapter 1: 1936

Fred Samuel was first introduced to the world of jewelry through his family, who famously dealt in gemstones. As a child, he was mesmerized by the sparkle of gems beneath the Argentine sun. He continued to cultivate this fascination in Paris, where he undertook training with the Worms brothers, pearl and gemstone dealers.

Spurred on by his mentors, Fred Samuel chose Rue Royale for the location of his first boutique thanks to its elegant arcades. He opened his office beneath one of these in a discreet space between shadow and light above the boutique. More than a simple decorative detail, this Art Deco arch holds particular significance for FRED, as it also reflects architecture typical of the Mediterranean and French Riviera, places Fred Samuel so cherished. Now one of the Maison’s hallmark patterns, it has inspired all four 1936 sets.

Both the connecting theme of its creations and a unique design element, the arch reveals multiple faces on each of its ten 1936 pieces. In all the sets, the Art Deco line plays on variable geometries, transforms from a perfect symmetry to a fluid asymmetry, or multiplies in a graphic cascade. In homage to gems, an eternal source of amazement for Fred Samuel, these contemporary variations encounter three colored stones and refined Akoya pearls in turn.

The first set shines a light on the Colombian emerald, sourced from the famous Muzo mines. For the second 1936 set, FRED has selected the cushion-cut Sri Lanka sapphire and reinterpreted its arch like an elegant vault, framing a waterfall of diamonds in an interplay of grain-set and claw-set stones. The Mozambique ruby blazes on the third set.

Chapter 2: Soleil d’Or Sunrise

Since the start, the sun and light have been a limitless source of creative energy for The Sunshine Jeweler. In 1977, Maison FRED’s path crossed with an exceptional yellow diamond of over 100 carats, whose radiant color literally appeared to have just captured the sun. This discovery married perfectly with Fred Samuel’s vision of radiant and truly luminous jewelry. Its sparkling name, chosen for the occasion, reflects the stone perfectly: Le Soleil d’Or.

Its nine creations with their graphic, contemporary lines play with different shades of the sun, captured at two key moments of the day: the soft, warm light it diffuses at sunrise, followed by the sparkling brilliance of its zenith.

Playing on the radiance of grain-set yellow diamonds and claw-set white diamonds, the first glimmers of dawn are revealed on a plastron necklace whose strands delicately caress the bust. At the heart of this radiant piece rests a 2-carat yellow diamond, whose Fancy Intense Yellow shade pays tribute to the legendary Soleil d’Or.

1936 saw Fred Samuel showcase his vision of modern, free, and luminous jewelry for the very first time. Nearly nine decades later, his love of light and colors shines through in these new High Jewelry creations, where contemporary and versatile lines meet the relaxed, chic aesthetic of fluid pieces to exude a natural elegance. An iconic signature pulsating with the joyful energy of FRED, The Sunshine Jeweler.
